Lion and hyena, herds of elephant, plains game, scorched dry season, wet season birdlife

Chobe National Park public reserve

Savute Marsh

Savute Marsh is one of Africa's best game-viewing areas with high densities of wildlife present all year. Elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra are joined by various antelope including tsessabe, roan, sable and eland. The main predators are lion, spotted hyena, jackal and bat-eared fox, with some cheetah and wild dog.

The area boasts excellent lion and hyena sightings - never far away and frequently heard.

Dry season sees a scorched yellow landscape with animals concentrated around available water or sheltering from the hot sun. When the rains come in November, the grass quickly greens and pans fill up to draw the plains game and abundant water birds.

Savuti Channel runs from Linyanti River to the marsh but has been dry for the majority of the last century. In 2010, it flowed again for the first time in 27 years. The years of lost water has resulted in the distinctive landscape of dead trees.
