Afrikat Foundation, cheetah sanctuary, rich birdlfe, Bushman trail
Okonjima Place of Baboons is home to the Afrikat Foundation, best known for its work rehabilitating cheetah but a sanctuary for a wider range of predators including leopard, wild dog, hyena, caracal and lion.
The plains of the reserve are set in the Omboroko Mountains to the west of the Waterberg Plateau, punctuated by old sandstone outcrops. Extensive walking trails reveal a rich birdlife with a number of Namibian endemics.
Namibia's large population of cheetah often finds itself in conflict with the farming community acting to protect livestock. The Afrikat Foundation provides a home for animals that would otherwise be killed.
Specialised activities cover rehabilitation work, radio-tracking of leopard and nightly visits to a hide where honey badger and porcupine can be viewed. The Bushman Trail explores the traditional ways of the hunter-gatherer people.
