Catfish and tigerfish, prolific birdlife, elephant and lechwe, Tsodilo Hills

Botswana

Okavango Panhandle

The Okavango Panhandle follows the river as it flows into the delta from Namibia on its journey from the mountains of Angola.

Wildlife is neither as prolific nor varied as the delta itself but nonetheless worthwhile with crocodile, hippo, elephant and even lechwe. The major draws are excellent fishing for catfish, tigerfish and largemouth bream and abundant birdlife, particularly warbler and _cisticola species.

A number of comfortable lodges on the west bank of the Okavango River are easily accessed from Maun on the road from running up to the Caprivi Strip. Fishing and game viewing are offered from motorised boats and even mokoro.

In the region, Tsodilo Hills makes an excellent contrasting excursion to see the scenic and sacred site of San rock paintings. Stalactites and stalactites of Drotsky's Caves are found at Gcwihaba Hills, with opportunites for an adventure above and below ground.
