Land-based whalewatching, pretty fishing port, cliff hikes
Hermanus is set around the pretty fishing port famous for its shore-based whalewatching from June to December. The town Whale Crier rings his bell to announce the latest arrrivals.
Extensive cliff paths frame the shoreline with views of Walker Bay and frequent sightings of the huge mammals, often close inshore. Peak season runs from August to October with calving around the coast in August and September.
Fishermen's cottages of the old harbour now house a museum dedicated to its marine history. The new harbour is home to a fishing fleet busy in the rich surrounding waters – popular also with anglers.
The annual Hermanus Whale Festival takes place at the end of September as an Arts celebration of the annual visit.
