Relaxed beach holiday town, diving and snorkel, sport fishing excellent seafood
Relaxed beach holiday resort Ponta do Ouro sit on a sweeping bay popular for its excellent diving sites and abundant fish. The sandy headland is most easily reached over sandy 4x4 tracks from South Africa's Kosi Bay. School holidays see an influx of braai-loving South Africans.
Several PADI dive centres offer dives, courses and equipment. Ponta do Oura has four sites with another dozen towards Ponta Malongane, a little way along the coast. The reef at Checkers is rich in colour with fish, anemomes and sponges.
Local restaurants make the best of the local seafood with fresh fish, curries and some challenging hot sauces. The isolated location means there is little crime in Ponto do Ouro.
Extensive beach, warm waters, surfing, windsurfing and safe bathing make a relaxed, informal holiday destination. Walking trails lead to dune forests and views from the lighthouse. Up the coast, nearby beaches are accessible by quad bike, hired for the day.
