The great grey-green, greasy Limpopo River, all set about with fever-trees

Botswana

Limpopo River

The mighty Limpopo River forms Botswana's southern border with South Africa, used by many road travellers heading for the northern game viewing areas.

Good overnight stopovers include private game reserves and other options on the river. Wildlife is well represented with leopard, bushpig and bat-eared foxes. Pels fishing owl and the secretive African finfoot are found among the excellent birdlife.

The great grey-green, greasy Limpopo River was famously so described by Rudyard Kipling in his Just So Stories. It offers fishing and the fine sight of crocodile and hippo carrying on their business just as observed by Kipling.
