Diverse and scenic landscape, forested lakes, mountain backdrop and varied vegetation

Rwanda public reserve

Akagera National Park

Akagera national park covers savannah, mountain and swamp close to the Tanzanian border. Although much of the best savannah grazing land has been given over to farmland for returning refugees, Akagera retains some of the most diverse and scenic landscape in Africa.

The park is named after Kagera River which flows along its eastern boundary feeding a complex system of lakes and papyrus swamps - the largest protected wetland in central Africa. The largest of the 12 lakes is Lake Ihema.

Wildlife ranges from elephant to elephant shrew, buffalo to bushbaby, with 11 antelope species topi, sitatunga, Defassa waterbuck, eland and oribi.

Major investment in Akagera will see the construction of a new western boundary fence, steady reinforcement of wildlife and the reintroduction of lion and black rhino.
