Relaxed capital city, Hotel Rwanda, Genocide centre
Kigali was founded in 1907 under German colonial rule, but did not become the capital until Rwandan independence in 1962 when it was chosen for its central location. Since then the city has grown quickly to become the major political, economic and cultural centre of Rwanda.
The relaxed city is built across four hills and the valleys. The city centre is located on one of these ridges, with the main government area on another. The city is surrounded by higher elevation - peaking at 1,850m with Mount Kigali.
Mille Collines is the hotel famously depicted in the film _ Hotel Rwanda_ as a refuge from the genocide. Kigali Genocide Memorial Centre is one of several memorials, museums and centres dedicated to the genocide.
Near the city centre, Sainte Famille Church is where thousands of terrified Tutsis and Hutu sympathisers took refuge from the rampant slaughter. Many were betrayed by the priest and handed over to their death.
