Gorilla trekking, climbing volcano peaks, rainforest birding

Rwanda public reserve

Volcanoes National Park

Volcanoes national park is best known for the eight habituated groups of mountain gorilla. Strictly controlled daily guided treks allow visitors to spend an hour with a group once they have been reached.

Dian Fossey set up the Karisoke Research Centre here to study the gorillas. Her work did much to bring their plight to worldwide attention. Her life was brought to the cinema screen in the film Gorillas in the Mist. Her grave in the park may be visited.

The five volcanoes of the Virunga Mountains - Karisimbi, Bisoke, Muhabura, Gahinga and Sabyinyo - are covered in rainforest and bamboo supporting several bird species endemic to the Virungas and Ruwenzoris. Mammals include golden monkey, spotted hyena, bushbuck, buffalo and possibly elephant.

Other activities include treks to climb Karisimbi or Bisoko volcano and tours of the lakes and caves. The Karisimbi climb is overnight.
