Dramatic pass through the face of the Drakensberg, linking Lesotho Highlands with Natal Midlands

Drakensberg South

Sani Pass

Sani Pass is the most dramatic of routes, linking Lesotho Highlands and Natal Midlands of South Africa. The road passes through the Drakensberg in a series of hairpins rising over 1000 metres to 2873m. Views are stunning but care is required even in the best of conditions.

At Sani Top, the highest pub in Africa makes a good place to enjoy the view over lunch - regaled by traditional songs from local musicians with home-made instruments.

There are plenty of hikes in the area, including Thabana Ntlenyana at 3482m, the highest point south of Kilimanjaro - just about achievable in a day with an early start.

Sani Top is linked to Sehlabathebe national park along the tough but beautiful 40 kilometre Top of the Berg hike.
