Eastern Cape

Settlers Coast

In 1820, a scheme sponsored by the British Government saw some 5,000 colonists travel from England to what is now the Eastern Cape. In essence, this was an attempt by the Cape Authorities to create a barrier between them and the resisting Xhosa people. On arrival, the Settlers were scarcely prepared for an agricultural life-style never mind the constant fighting with the people whose land they had been allocated. Many were lost but villages such as Bathurst show good examples of early buildings.
