Shipwrecks, arid weathered canyons, volcanic highlands, barchan dunes, lion and elephant

Namibia public reserve with 16000 km2

Skeleton Coast

Numerous shipwrecks on the Skeleton Coast have seen survivors fall to its impenetrable landscape - ocean-swept dunes, arid weathered canyons and volcanic highlands.

More than a thousand ships have met their end here - littered wrecks best seen from the air. Whale bones, elegant barchan dunes and gemstones contribute to the fascinating landscape.

Despite inhospitable conditions, many species manage to adapt and survive. Lion, elephant, black rhino and giraffe can all be seen. Huge numbers of seal are found along the shore around Cape Cross.

Access is strictly controlled to protect visitors as much as the national park. Many illicit diamond-hunters have brought about their own downfall.
