Granite mountains, hiking country, fine views, succulent karoo, desert horses
Sperrgebiet Rand park is set around dry riverbeds and stark granite mountains rising from coastal plains of southern Namibia. Volcanic Dikke Wilhem stands proudly welcoming visitors to climb it. Elsewhere, vast spaces provide simple tranquillity.
Great hiking country offers fine viewpoints over pastel landscapes, brought to life with a delicate carpet of flowers after the winter rains - sharing its desert system with South Africa's Namaqualand.
The famous wild desert horses are best sighted around the waterhole at Garub but are spotted over a larger area - tough and well-adapted to harsh dry conditions.
Typical desert mammals found in the area are oryx, springbok, ostrich, jackal and brown hyena. The overlap of the Succulent Karoo, Nama Karoo and Dune Namib has created a highly biodiverse desert area with many endemic plant and animal species. Close to half of 50 species of scorpion are unique to the area.
