The launch point of the northern safari adventure

Tanzania

Arusha

Arusha is the gateway to the Northern safari circuit, reflecting the popularity over recent decades with huge increases in its own population. Most tours stop overnight, with a number of good options in and around.

Mount Meru, dominating views to the north, was once Africa's highest mountain, but now lies in fifth place following a hugely destructive eruption 250,000 years ago. Today's highest peak, Kilimanjaro, is within easy reach.

Meru's parent, Arusha National Park makes a pleasant day trip - rainforest, lakes, hikes and views. Ngurodoto Crater offers sightings of its large buffalo herd, birds of prey and forest-dwelling monkeys.

Lake Duluti sits in a volcanic crater outside town, surrounded by forest, rich with colourful birdlife - turaco, Narina trogon and lovable hornbills.
