Southern Tip of Africa, lighthouse museum, fynbos reserve, hiking trails
Cape Agulhas is marked by the bold red stripes of its lighthouse and, after a short stroll, the Southern Tip of Africa. The route to Cape Agulhas is notable for its strikingly flat marshy terrain and white-washed fisherman's cottages.
The 1962 lighthouse now holds a small collection of maritime exhibits as part of the Bredasdorp Museum. The original lighthouse was built in 1848, using an oil burner for over 50 years. The difficult stormy coast has claimed over 250 shipwrecks.
The rugged rocky coastline marks the edge of Agulhas National Park protected for its unique types of lowland fynbos vegetation. The area has many walking trails and the long sandy beach hike at Struisbaai.
Offshore, the Agulhas Bank is probably the richest fishing ground south of the equator and the notional location where warm Indian Ocean meet the cold Atlantic. In practice, the intermixing of currents is more complicated.
