East Africa's last great herds of buffalo, crocodile caves and unspoilt wilderness

Tanzania public reserve

Katavi

Katavi national park is prime wilderness - one of the most untouched areas of Tanzania. It offers unspoilt wildlife viewing in the country's third-largest national park.

The remote location is far off the beaten track in the Rukwa Valley - a minor fault of the western rift. Rivers run down the escarpments through tamarind and albida forests to vast floodplains.

Katavi is home to the last great herds of buffalo in East Africa along with herds of elephant.

During the dryer months, Katavi boasts the sight of hundreds of hippos packed into the last of the remaining water and the chilling spectacle of crocodile-filled hollows in the muddy banks of the dried-out river.
