Beach getaway, top class fishing and sultanate palace of the Shirazi empire
In medieval times, the Kilwa area was a thriving hub in the trade of gold linking old Zimbabwe with Arabia and the Far East. It later became a main slaving station and regional headquarters for the German administration.
Kilwa Kisiwani is a World Heritage Site as power base of the Kilwa sultanate which ruled over a great trading empire. Ruins of the coral stone Mkutini Palace and Great Mosque bear witness to the riches. The large fortress on the beach marks the later Omani rule.
Kilwa Kivinje became the centre of the slave trade as the Omani traders moved to the mainland with numbers up to 20,000 being shipped annually to Zanzibar. As the slave trade was ended in the 1870s, German authorities set up their own regional administration.
Activity today is based around the fishing port Kilwa Masoko which offers a good sandy beach getaway to complement excellent sport fishing.
