Steep volcanic walls enclose the grassland Big Five arena

Tanzania

Ngorongoro Crater

The memorable first sighting from Heroes Point reveals the full extent of the huge flat base of Ngorongoro Crater, home to a vast circus of African wildlife hemmed in by the steep walls of the volcanic rim.

The best known feature of the Northern Circuit brings together spectacular volcanic scenery, a high density of large mammals and probably a few too many visitors for comfort! Sightings of lion, elephant and buffalo are pretty much certain, with rhino and leopard also present.

The presence of black rhino is particulalry interesting as a rarity in the northern parks of Tanzania.

Features of the Crater floor include the flamingo-populated soda waters of Lake Magadi, the distinctive fever trees of Lerai Forest but principally extensive flat grassland.
