Large numbers of elephants, good lion and leopard sightings make exciting game viewing along the river

Tanzania public reserve

Ruaha

Dramatic topography, a vast range of habitats, large baobabs and dramatic game viewing compensate for Ruaha's comparative inaccessibility. The national park is noted for an elephant population of some 10,000 and rich birdlife.

Ruaha is one of Tanzania's largest national parks - alongside the Serengeti and Katavi. Sightings of large prides of lions are common, along with good chances of cheeatah on the plains and leopard.

During dry season, it is one of the most exciting game reserves as the game is drawn to the river that runs through spectacular gorges lined with majestic trees.

Game viewing is best from July through to November - avoiding the worst of the tsetse fly nuisance and problematic thick bush of May and June immediately after the rains. Birding is best during the wetter months at the start of the year.
