Ancient rain forest, mountain gorilla trekking, abundant birdlife
Evocative of the Adventures of Tin Tin, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is a rain forest dating back 25,000 years and once stretching to the Virunga Mountains.
This is the richest forest in Uganda in terms of the number of plant species - one of the few large expanses of forest in East Africa where lowland and montane communities merge.
Valleys contain dense ground cover of herbs, vines and shrubs with few trees. The animal community includes half of the world's population of 600 endangered mountain gorilla and several endangered bird species with limited ranges. Other primate species include chimpanzee, monkey and baboon.
Gorilla trekking requires a permit which should be arranged in advance - quite expensive and in limited supply.
