Uganda capital and traditional seat of the Buganda Kingdom

Uganda

Kampala

Today's capital of Uganda, Kampala grew from the capital of the earlier Buganda kingdom. The site is believed to have been originally chosen for its hunting.

Kasubi Tombs, dating from 1881, on Kasubi Hill is the burial site of four Buganda kings, known as Kabaka, from 1884 to 1969. However, the buildings were severely damaged by fire in early 2010. Nearby The earlier Wamala Tomb retains its traditional thatched dome and a range of royal possessions.

Crowned with narrow spires, the Bulange on Namirembe Hill is an impressive brick building and seat of the Buganda Parliament where cultural and related matters complement the political work of the national parliament. Kabaka Njabala avenue connects Bulange with the royal Lubiri or Mengo palace.

The modern city is built around a number hills. The original colonial fort and capital was located at Kampala Hill*in 1890. A few rundown buildings remaining from the colonial era. The most affluent area, *Nakasero Hill is location of a number of luxury hotels.
