Free-standing volcano, elephant and buffalo, rich birdlife, good trekking country
Free-standing volcanic Mount Elgon sits on the border between Uganda and Kenya. Wagaga at 4321m is the tallest of the peaks that rise from its 8 kilometre caldera which bubbles with hot springs.
Spectacular waterfalls and caves make fine rugged trekking country, with two main trails to explore - Sasa and Peswa. Elgon has rich biodiversity from montane forest to high open moorland with the giant flowering lobelia. Species include giant podocarpus conifer, juniper, Elgon olive tree and many orchids.
Elephant and buffalo can be found on the lower slopes, along with small antelope and forest monkey, including black-and-white Colobus and blue monkey.
The mountain boasts some 300 bird species with a rich variety of forest species. Regularly seen raptors include the endangered lammergeier bearded vulture.
