Thrusting Nile, Big Five, river cruises, shoebill stork

Uganda public reserve

Murchison Falls

The impressive Murchison Falls are fed by the Nile as it divides the national park and drives through a narrow gap in the Rift Valley Escarpment with enormous power.

Murchison Falls is the only place in Uganda with Big Five - regular sightings of lion, elephant, buffalo herds in the thousands and leopard, best seen north of the river. Rhino have been re-introduced in a sanctuary in the south. Notable antelope include oribi and the aggressive Uganda kob.

Paraa is the focus of visitor activity with boat cruises and game viewing. The river ferry connects grassland of the north with woodland and thick canopy forest of the south. River birds include the shoebill stork.

Uganda's largest conservation area covers the Murchison Falls National Park, Budongo Forest and reserves at Bugungu and Karuma.
