Lake Victoria Uganda
Lake Victoria is the Africa's largest freshwater lake by area, second in the world. Depth of only 80 metres, high evaporation levels and limited inflow make it vulnerable to climate change. It has dried up entirely more than once over its history.
The lake has countless islands, peninsulas and swamps favoured by the sitatunga antelope and shoebill stork.
Rich fishing resources are focussed on tasty tilapia, and tiny omena. Nile perch have thrived since their introduction in 1954, growing to 200kg. Popular for sport fishing, the success of Nile perch has led to the diminution of tilapia stocks on which they feed and the extinction of many of the cichlid species.
