Unspoilt coastline, fishing villages, long sandy beaches, dramatic mountains, remote hiking country
South Africa's West Coast is an area of unspoilt rocky coastline behind long sandy beaches, fine mountains, a seasonal carpeting of colourful wildflowers and abundant seafood.
Dry conditions provides a golden inland landscape with striking Cederberg mountain scenery in sharp contrast to the windswept coast at Cape Colombine, scene of many shipwrecks.
Prolific waterbirds along the coastal wetlands include Langebaan Lagoon in West Coast national park. Colourful flamingo take flight with common sightings of passing pelican squadrons.
Bird Island at Lamberts Bay is home to a colony of 25,000 gannet closely viewed from the modern hide. Seal Island boasts around 100,000 Cape fur seal seen from small boats.
