Namibian capital, German colonial castles, rolling mountains

Namibia city

Windhoek

Capital city Windhoek sits on the Khomas Hochland plateau in the centre of Namibia, geographically and commercially. The first settlement was established in 1840 by migrant Jonker Afrikaner who set up a community with his folllowers around artesian springs.

The location between warring Nama and Herero areas was abandoned until German occupation in 1890 when Alte Feste fort was established. The early 20th century saw rapid growth with the arrival of settlers from Germany, South Africa and rural areas.

The early development is marked by Heinitzburg, Sanderburg, and Schwerinsburg castles. Close to central Independence Avenue, the Meteorite Fountain is based around 30 meteorites found near Gibeon and each weighing several hundred kilos.

Christuskirche is an imposing basilica with a mix of art nouveau and gothic. Behind it, the short-lived German colonial headquarters at Tintenpalast is home to the national parliament. Reiter Denkmal is an equestrian monument honouring those who fell in the Nama and Herero wars.
