North Luangwa wilderness, Livingstone's final steps, Shiwa Nganda Africa House
Zambia's Northern Circuit follows the Great North Road it heads for Tanzania, passing wilderness reserves and a fascinating colonial curiosity. The highland route marks a watershed leading west into the Atlantic-facing Congo and east to the Zambesi flowing to the Indian Ocean.
North Luangwa national park represents the wilderness of the Luangwa Valley. Similar in terrain and wildlife to South Luangwa, it offers exclusivity and remoteness - accessed by air or road.
To the east, Kasanka national park and the wetlands of Bangweulu offer more remote wilderness with their own distinctive wildlife. Here David Livingstone finally succumbed to sickness, ending his search for the Source of the Nile.
Lake Ishiba Ng'andu Lake of the Royal Crocodile is small but scenic, known internationally through Christina Lamb's Africa House. Her book describes the life of Stewart Gore-Browne - pioneer white settler, politician and supporter of African independence. The house is Shiwa Nganda, open to guests with nearby Kapishya Hot Springs.
