Massive herds of buffalo, lake shore lions, black rhino, dramatic scenery, river-side safari walks
Matusadona national park attracts large herds of buffalo and elephant to the shores of Lake Kariba during the dry season from June to October, adding to resident lion, antelope and rich birdlife. Herds of up to 1000 buffalo are matched by one of the most concentrated lion populations in Africa.
The park spans a mix of plains and the thickly covered Zambesi Escarpment which provides scenic mountain views and terrain that is largely inaccessible except to walking safaris following the rivers that feed into the Zambesi. Game viewing is focussed around the scenic lake shore, a mix of island humps, gorges and gentler bays and creeks.
Grassy banks of unspoilt lake front are exposed at all but highest water levels to provide good grazing to detain animals that have come to drink. The baby rhino project at Tashinga is a refuge for orphans until they can be released. Effective protection has made Matusadona one of Zimbabwe's best black rhino locations.
