Sandy beaches, great diving, abundant marine life, whale sharks and barefoot luxury
Mafia Island is a retreat for adventure divers, game fishermen or simply barefoot relaxation. Warm, clear, protected waters are ideal for swimming and sailing. Diving and snorkelling are amongst the best in the world - with many smaller islands reefs.
South-east of Dar off the Rufiji Delta, Mafia was a regular stop for Arab and Persian dhows from Kilwa and Mozambique from the 12th Century onwards.
Chole Bay is part of the Mafia Island Marine Park and has many lovely beaches. The marine park boasts close to 400 species of fish, tens of types of coral and breeding turtles. Just offshore, the tiny island of Chole Mjini has ruins dating back to more affluent times controlling the silver trade.
Large numbers of massive whale shark can be found feeding in the waters around Mafia - all year but in greatest numbers from December to March.
