The Zulu kingdom was built up on the military skills of the mighty and fearsome King Shaka under whose reign neighbouring tribes either joined his rule or fled - creating a violent domino effect over much of Southern Africa. While many Zulu people now live in major townships around Durban, many others live a rural life in the rolling hills of Zululand. Traditions are strong and visitors welcome to join local ceremonies such as wedding festivities as well as cultural shows.
