A land of rich variety, of noble and ancient cultures
Rich cultures - past and present - and fine beaches are the main drawcards of West Africa, with a sprinkling of voodoo, game viewing and the lasting memory of the horrors of the slave trade.
Ghana combines beach destinations along its historical Gold Coast with Asante tradition at Kumasi and game viewing at Kakum and Mole. Nigeria, too, offers beach resorts, views of its colonial past and some stunning scenery - found also in Benin and Togo.
Senegal packs in a varied set of experiences - from beach resorts and pelican colonies to the fascinating island city of St Louis and buzzing Dakar. Gambia unashamedly offers itself as beach destination with a handful of wildlife and historical excursions.
Sierra Leone and Guinea-Bissau both offer stunning, unspoilt beach hideaways.
