Sierra Leone Guide

West Africa

Sierra Leone

With the blood diamond inspired Civil War behind it, Sierra Leone is busy developing its potential as a tourist destination around tropical beaches, savannah and rain forest.

Beautiful palm-fringed beaches close to the capital, Freetown, remain unspoilt. A little further, boats to Turtle Islands access the great fishing and fine beaches.

Travel inland is difficult but rewarded with varied landscapes and fine wildlife parks. Outamba Kilimi is rich with birds, with antelopes, elephants and even pygmy hippos. Chimpanzees are the star attraction at Tiwai Island, again rich with birds.

The name Freetown relates to its late 18th Century transformation from Portuguese and British slaving centre to home to freed slaves, shipped out from poverty in England and north America.
