Gambia Guide
Coming Soon
Africa's smallest country is best known as a beach package destination, chiefly for UK visitors. The country follows the course of the Gambia River, clearly held as strategic territory during colonial times.
The original Portuguese trading post at James Island became a major slaving station. The slaving connection was brought to prominence in 1976 when Alex Haley's Roots traced his origins back to a small Gambian village.
Tourism is focussed around the resort suburbs of Serrekunda at Senegambia, Kololi, Kotu and Bakau. Most visitors venture little further than the hotel shoreline and neighbouring restaurants.
River cruises make popular excursions, with a focus on the rich birdlife and the history of slavery. To the south, fishing villages and less visited beaches offer more of the kess developed side of the country.
