Kwame Nkrumah's Ghana led the way for African countries as it achieved independence from colonial Britain. Fantastic beaches, rich traditional cultures and good infrastructure make today's Gold Coast an excellent destination.
The fine resorts of the Cape Coast stretch west from Accra with fine hideaways such as Busua. Impressive coastal forts and mementoes of the slave trade add poignant reminders of the colonial past.
The heart of the Asante kingdom lies in Kumasi, a busy city packed with tradition and an excellent touring base.
Kakum national park offers rainforest and excitement with a 300 metre rope walkway high in the forest, rich with birds, butterflies, monkeys and antelope. Rather less accessible Mole adds elephant, buffalo in its savannah park together with the occasional lion or leopard.
