Fishing harbour, imposing sentinel, impressive coastal scenery, seal island

Cape Town

Hout Bay

Hout Bay is impressively marked by the Sentinel a massive granite outcrop that sits over the harbour entrance to offer one of Cape Town's most spectacular views.

Rich fish stocks in the cold Atlantic waters support a thriving fishing industry based in the harbour. Local fresh fish and chips are among the many attractions that include hiking and kayaking as well as fishing.

Daily cruises run to Duiker Island home to several thousand Cape Fur Seal and rich in sea birds around its small area. Longer trips include the wreck of a crane barge that ran aground at Maori Bay in 1995.

The route south along the Cape Peninsula continues through Chapman's Peak, an impressive feat of civil engineering first built by Italian prisoners-of-war. Views of and from the toll road are well worth the effort.
