Clanwilliam is located under the impressive Cederberg mountains within easy reach of Cape Town. It is among the ten oldest towns in South Africa dating back to 18th century.

Historical walks through the town take in a number of national monuments including the museum in the old jailhouse and a house dating back to the 1820 Settlers, some of whom formed a local community.

On the approach to the town, Clanwilliam Dam is used for local irrigation schemes supplying citrus farms and vineyards. On its bank is Ramskop wild flower reserve boasts excellent views of the dam and Cederberg along over 350 species in its gardens.

Red bush Rooibos tea is grown locally to be processed and packaged in the town factory. Rooibos is a type of fynbos grown locally only in the mountainous area around Clanwilliam and Nieuwoudtville to the north . It is known for its healthy refreshing caffeine-free properties.
