Spectacular mountain hiking country, weathered red sandstone, rock art, leopard and raptors
Cederberg wilderness area is excellent hiking country with spectacular mountain views and strikingly red rock formations typified by Maltese Cross and Wolfberg Arch. Klipspringer, grey rhebok, dassie and baboon are often seen in the area - named after the now rare Clanwilliam cedar tree.
Impressive rock formations are made up largely of folded Table Mountain sandstone weathered to leave a distinctively red landscape at its best in late afternoon light.
Rock art dating back up to 6,000 years is found in many of the caves and overhangs along the numerous trails. Prominent among the birdlife are large raptors black eagle and jackal buzzard. Venomous puff adder, berg adder and black spitting cobra are also resident.
Local predators include a good population of elusive leopard, African wild cat and bat-eared fox. Porcupine, honeybadger and aardvark are among the nocturnal species. Local vegetation is mainly mountain fynbos that includes the endemic and scarce snow protea and rooibos tea plants.
