Most of Tsavo East consists of semi-arid grasslands and savanna. Nevertheless, strong biodiversity attracts a vast range of wildlife. Big Five are all present, including subspecies Masai lion and good elephant viewing around the lodges.
Rich birdlife is found along Yatta Plateau, one of the world's longest lava flows running alongside the Athi river. Lugard Falls are notable for rock formations distinctively eroded by rapids on the Galana river, impressive even in the dry season.
Mudanda Rock is a 1.6 kilometre outcrop of stratified rock that acts as a water catchment supplying a natural dam below. It offers an excellent vantage point for the hundreds of elephants and other wildlife that come to drink during the dry season.
