South Africa's biggest bay, warm waters, surfing, fishing, whalewatching, mountain backdrop
False Bay stretches around a deep curve from Cape Point to the distinctive rock formation at Hangklip. The Cape Peninsula mountain range and Helderberg peaks provide a striking backdrop.
Warmer waters, good surfing and safe swimming make the sandy beaches at Gordon's Bay, Strand and Muizenberg popular alternatives to the Atlantic coastline. Good fishing is complemented by shore-based whalewatching in season from July to December.
The west of the Bay has a number of fishing ports at Kalk Bay and the longstanding naval base at Simons Town.
False Bay is named for the reputed propensity for mariners to mistake Hangklip for the headland at Cape Point. It is the biggest bay in South Africa with a distance of over 30 kilometres across the mouth.
