Capital of the Kalahari, cattle country, San bushmen
Ghanzi Capital of the Kalahari is now linked to the world by the Trans-Kalahari highway but remains alone in the midst of dry, hot featureless plains. Better access has opened the area with good tourism facilities, lodges and camps.
The area, traditional San bushman country, was settled by Boer trekkers in 1890s lured by cheap land dubiously obtained by Cecil Rhodes quickly expanding empire. Plentiful groundwater transformed the area into rich pastureland which now supports the country's best cattle farms.
The population today is a mix of bushmen, kgalagadi, herero, tswana and afrikaaner, whose language is commonly spoken. Popular excursions for visitors include an introduction to the skills and culture of the Bushman.
