Capital city, colonial sandstone, Thaba Bosiu mountain stronghold
Capital Maseru is Lesotho's only major population centre, swelled over recent decades by economic migrants from poverty in the mountains. It is located close to King Moshoeshoes's impregnable mountain stronghold at Thaba Bosiu.
Much of the city is enclosed by the Caledon River which marks the boundary with South Africa. The border leads directly into Kingsway, the main street that forms the heart of the the city.
Although dominated by unsympathetic high-rise, many sandstone buildings remain from the period of colonial British administration from 1869. The Residents Commissioner's House and the old library are among those dating back to the end of 19th century.
Lancers Gap is worth a climb for views over Maseru and the mountains to the east. Even more accessible are the Word, the Flesh and the Devil. These peaks are linked by a ridge with views over the city from its southern boundary. Further south, Qeme Plateau has fine views over the plains of Free State.
