Pleasant climate, impressive Ethiopian Orthodox churches, huge diverse population

Ethiopia

Addis Ababa

Capital city Addis Ababa was founded by Emperor Menelik II in 1886 below Mount Entoto, a sacred location with many monasteries. The site, near Filwoha hot mineral springs, was chosen by Empress Taytu Betul for its pleasant climate to build a house, later to become the Imperial Palace.

The status of the Ethiopian Orthodox church is reflected in the octagonal coronation place of Haile Selassie at St George's Cathedral and Holy Trinity Cathedral where the emperor's remains are entombed. The National Palace, residence of the _President of Ethiopia, was built to mark Emperor Haile Selassie's Silver Jubilee in 1955.

Central Meskel Square is used for large public rallies and festivals, including the notable Meskel Festival. Nearby is the National Museum with many of the most important archaeological finds, memorabilia from former rulers and various cultural exhibits.

Merkato district grew from Italian removal of Arab traders from St George's market, to be reserved for Europeans. It now boasts the biggest open market in Africa as well as the Grand Anwar Mosque, the biggest in Ethiopia.
