The site of early Swahili settlement, Wasini Island is the sparsely populated home to the Vumba people, living in its two villages. Wasini village retains many of its old ruins, including ancient tombs.
Wasini, small and undeveloped with no roads, makes a popular excursion based around a crab claw lunch. The island is a good base for snorkel and diving excursions to Kisite-Mpunguti marine reserve south of the island.
On land, coral gardens behind the village now sit above sea-level, accessed by a boardwalk which continues into the mangrove swamp. The area is rich with butterflies, parrots and other birds and passing monkeys.
