Kenya's highest mountain, rich forests and spiritual home

Central Kenya public reserve

Mount Kenya

Free-standing Mount Kenya is the highest mountain in Kenya, second only in Africa to Kilimanjaro. Periods of glaciation have resulted in numerous valleys. The trio of peaks is headed by mountain are Batian at 5,199 metres.

The highest peak that can be ascended without climbing is Point Lenana at 4,985 metres (16,355 ft), climbed by thousands of visitors each year.

The national park covers the mountain itself and much surrounding forest reserve. The World Heritage Site is important for its biodiversity. Many endemic species include flowering lobelias, senecio daises and rock hyrax. Buffalo, colobus and other monkeys are found at lower altitudes.

Mount Kenya has great spiritual significance for each of the Kikuyu, Ameru, Embu and Maasai people in the region.
