Black rhino, chimpanzee sanctuary and views of Mount Kenya
Ol Pejeta, in view of Mount Kenya, boasts a history as rich as its game viewing. For many years the land was owned by Lord Delamere and used as a cattle ranch. This continued under arms dealer and playboy Adnan Khashoggi who added the luxurious Ol Pejeta Ranch House.
Under the ownership of Tiny Rowlands' Lonrho Africa, Sweetwaters Conservancy was created as a sanctuary for endangered black rhino. This was expanded to form the Ol Pejeta conservancy in 2004. In 2009, the last remaining northern white rhino were moved to the reserve in the hope of breeding their survival.
Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary was opened in 1993 to save a group of chimpanzee from war torn Burundi. It has continued to rescue chimpanzees, now over 40 in number.
All members of the Big Five are present on the reserve. Jackson's hartebeest, Grevy's zebra, serval cat, African wild dog and bat-eared fox are among the more unusual species.
