Narrow Swahili streets, colourful fishing harbour, impressive battlements of Fort Jesus
Mombasa's compact Old Town dates back to 13th century, through early Arab trading, Portuguese occupation, Omani rule and British colonial administration.
Narrow Swahili streets, overhanging balconies and solid carved doors make a pleasant relaxed area to explore, packed with sights and sounds to evoke past eras.
The dhow harbour, previously used to transport slaves, remains colourful and busy as local fishermen harvest the days catch, away from the more industrial main docks to the west.
The main attraction for visitors is 15th century Portuguese Fort Jesus which remains largely intact.
