Fading colonial architecture, impressive limestone caves and ruined Arab trading centre

Tanzania North Coast city

Tanga

Faded German architecture betrays its relative decline but Tanga remains a sizable city with a pleasant feel and a number of interesting excursions.

Tanga came to prominence as the late 19th Century German presence recognised the strategic importance of its deep natural harbour. Exports were based around the production of Sisal, used for rope, and the construction of the Moshi railway link.

Amboni Caves show off a network of narrow passages linking larger caverns and an array of organic formations. The limestones caves date back 150 million years, covering a huge area - mainly inaccessible.

To the south, Tongoni Ruins bear testament to the busy 15th century trading centre up to and beyond Portuguese rule which followed visits by Vasco da Gama. Mains interest lies in the 40 tombs in the cemetary and the remains of the mosque.
