Excellent hiking country natural forest, fine views and rich in biodiversity

Tanzania

Usambara Mountains

The Usambara Mountains form part of the Eastern Arc of mountains that stretches north into neighbouring Kenya. The range is excellent hiking country, generally split into Western and Eastern Usambara.

Survival of the rainforest and a stable climate have supported the evolution of rich biodiversity with a high number of unique species.

Western Usambara is the more cultivated and includes the busy town of Lushoto. Steep valleys, indigenous forest and tea plantations can be explored on foot, with magnificent views across the underlying plains.

Eastern Usambara makes up for its comparative lack of altitude with its ecological richness across major areas of close canopy forest. Amani Natural Forest combines forest walks with its wealth of natural diversity.
