Historical reminders of old empires, hardwood forests, sandy beaches and good diving

Tanzania

Mtwara

Mtwara is home to the artistic Makonde people, known for their carving, but has remained less developed. This is largely due to problematic road access - somewhat improved with a new bridge over the Rufiji River.

Mikindani Bay has a long history as a strategic base, with a number of small harbours and decaying buildings from Omani trading and German administration.

Important forested areas include the Rondo Forest Reserve on the slopes of the Rondo Plateau close to Lindi. Hardwood trees support an important birding area.

British colonial plans to develop the area for the production ground nuts foundered on bad planning compounded by bad luck. The Groundnut Scheme was to have exported groundnut oil through the port at Mtwara to alleviate Britain's food shortages after World War Two.
