Large numbers of plains game, elephant and giraffe, walking trails in wooded hills and open grasslands, fine scenery.
Mikumi is a major national park in its own right, sharing its wider ecosystem with neighbouring Selous. Serengeti-like grassland savannah and wooded hills are toppped and tailed by mountains to the north and south to provide fine views.
Elephant and giraffe are commonly sighted among large numbers of plains game and buffalo. Larger antelope species include the impressive eland around Mkata Plain, the greater kudu and the elegant sable. Tree-climbing lions may also be spotted.
Birdlife is abundant with a greater number of species in the woodland areas but more easily spotted on the floodplains. Guided walking trails are available through Vuma Hills and Ngotikwe Hills.
The main Dar es Salaam highway allows access by road, detracting at times from the wilderness feel.
